The Russian writer Andrej travels to Italy to research a 19th century Russian composer. Together with the interpreter Eugenia, Andrej travels to various places where his compatriot worked. The experience of the foreign landscape and culture and the overwhelming memory of his homeland are hard on Andrej. In his pain, he rejects Eugenia's love and finds a kindred spirit in the slightly crazy mathematician Domenico.
